DeAndre Yedlin has told MLS Soccer that his first six months at Tottenham Hotspur was a lot tougher than he expected.
The 23-year-old left the USA to join up with Tottenham in January 2015, having signed for the London club in the previous August.
But the United States international managed just the one Premier League appearance – a cameo in the 1-0 home defeat by Aston Villa.
With his first-team prospects looking bleak, Yedlin was sent on loan to Sunderland and made 21 top-flight appearances for the Black Cats, before Spurs sold him to Newcastle United this past summer.
The former Seattle Sounders right-back has been a regular fixture in Newcastle’s side over the past couple of months, but speaking to MLS Soccer – which quotes him as saying he had a “very, very challenging” first six months with the Lilywhites – he has reflected on his difficult start to life in England.
“The first six months to a year was a bit tougher than I thought it was going to be,” he said.
“But obviously I was at Sunderland last year and I lived in Newcastle, so I knew Newcastle from my time there, so living in Newcastle now it almost feels like a second home. So that’s been a pretty easy transition.”
Yedlin has set up two and scored one in nine Championship appearances for the Magpies, who sit top of the table.
