DeAndre Yedlin has made 32 appearances for Newcastle United this season.
DeAndre Yedlin has told Sports Illustrated that he didn’t want to move to Newcastle United initially last summer.
Yedlin decided to leave Tottenham Hotspur in 2016, and he wanted a Premier League move at first.
Yedlin had previously impressed on loan at Sunderland, and looked to capabilities to play in the top flight.
However, Newcastle announced their intentions to sign Yedlin early on in the transfer window.
And, after a discussion with Rafael Benitez, Yedlin was persuaded that a move to the Championship with Newcastle was a good step for his career.
“Kind of in the middle of July, [my agent] said there was Newcastle interest,” he said. “But at first, I didn’t want to go down a league.
“It was a risk. It was a very, very tough choice. But I made it and stuck with it. I kind of took it on myself. Obviously, I spoke with different people. But I tried not to let their opinions weigh on my decision. I sat down with myself. ‘What do you want to do? What are the pros and cons?’”
Yedlin’s gamble has certainly paid off, as he is now set to play Premier League football again next season.
The American international has impressed during his first term with Newcastle, and looks likely to be handed a starting role by Benitez next term.
Yedlin has made 32 appearances for the Magpies to date, scoring once and creating six assists.
