DeAndre Yedlin was on loan at Sunderland, before joining Newcastle United on a permanent deal.
DeAndre Yedlin has admitted to the Guardian that he is thankful to Newcastle United fans for supporting him, despite the fact he spent time with Sunderland.
Yedlin was on loan at Sunderland in the 2015/16 campaign, and he impressed at the Stadium of Light.
The American then made a switch to Newcastle last summer, on a permanent deal from Tottenham Hotspur.
Yedlin has become a very popular figure at St. James’ Park, through his performances this campaign.
And the American international admits that he is lucky that Newcastle fans have forgiven him for his stint at Sunderland
“I mean, obviously there’s a rivalry, but the way I see it I was a Sunderland player on loan and this [Newcastle] is my new team now,” he said.
“I’m fortunate that Newcastle and the fans welcomed me with open arms because I know it’s not easy being a former Sunderland player. I have to say thanks to them for that. I wasn’t nervous at all though [about joining Newcastle]. At the end of the day this is my team now and I’m glad to be here.”
Yedlin made 27 appearances for Newcastle in the Championship this season.
The 23-year-old is expected to be part of Rafael Benitez’s first choice defence, when Newcastle return to the Premier League.
