Aston Villa are said to want Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Barry Bannan in January.

According to the Daily Mirror, Aston Villa boss Dean Smith wants to sign Barry Bannan and that may not be too much of a surprise, given the 47-year-old boss’s comments on the Sheffield Wednesday midfielder earlier this season.

Smith has reportedly identified Bannan as his first transfer target at Villa, as he looks to improve his squad.

And Smith spoke of his admiration for Bannan back in August, ahead of Brentford’s match with Sheffield Wednesday.

Bannan was the first player that Smith singled out as a threat for Wednesday, which proves that he considers the Scot to be a talent.

He said to Football London just months ago: “We’re just looking forward to a game against some talented players.

“Barry Bannan’s played in the Premier League for a long time, Fletcher has played in the Premier League. They’ve got an awful lot of very good players there so we will have to be at our best.”

If Bannan was to arrive at Villa he could offer creativity, dynamism and more of a goal threat from midfield.

Smith’s Villa have shown signs of promise, but they have lost two of the three games he has taken charge of so far.

The claret and blues are next in action on Friday evening when they take on struggling Bolton Wanderers.
