Aston Villa could welcome back Jack Grealish this weekend.

Aston Villa boss Dean Smith has told the club’s official website that playmaker Jack Grealish is pushing to be fit for Saturday’s game with Liverpool.

Villa beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1 in the Carabao Cup last night, with Anwar El Ghazi and Ahmed Elmohamady scoring either side of a Patrick Cutrone strike for the visitors.

It was a much-changed Villa side from the one that lost 3-0 to Manchester City on Saturday afternoon, with Grealish one of the key names not in the line-up.

Grealish was taken off injured against City, suffering a calf issue that caused him to leave the Etihad Stadium on crutches after the full time whistle had blown.

The Daily Mail reported earlier this week that Grealish was facing at least two weeks out, and Villa were fearing it could be as long as four weeks out.

Given how impressive Grealish has been in the Premier League this season, that would be a huge blow for Villa, but fans have received a boost they can’t have expected.

After Wednesday’s game, Smith admitted that Grealish is actually okay, and having responded well to treatment on his calf, he is now pushing to play against Liverpool.

“Jack is okay. He’s pushing to be fit for Saturday,” said Smith. “He’s responded really well to treatment. He was here today,” he added.
