Dean Smith shares what Aston Villa’s players were saying about the fans

Aston Villa boss Dean Smith has lost two of his first three games in charge at the Midlands club.

Dean Smith has told the Express and Star that Aston Villa fans were the subject of discussion in the dressing room after his first game in charge.

Villa won 1-0 against Swansea City last month, in what was Smith’s first game in charge, and the atmosphere at Villa Park was excellent.

The claret and blues have since lost their last two matches on their travels, to increase frustrations in the fan base.

But Smith wants Villa fans to be back on side this weekend, when they take on Bolton Wanderers on Friday.

“You can’t underestimate the importance of the fans in getting the team over the line,” Smith said.

“They drive you forward when you’re struggling and they power you on when you’re winning. They are vital.

“I was certainly left with an impression in my head about what the fans can do when the place is packed.

“The players were talking about it in the dressing room after the game, too. They loved the atmosphere and I want that again and again here at Villa Park.

“Bolton are next up and I’d urge the fans to come and back us again. They’re so vital.”

Villa have recently lost to both Norwich City and Queens Park Rangers, despite showing signs of promise.

Smith is clearly altering Villa’s style fairly dramatically, and the players are still adjusting to the changes.

Villa are currently in 17th place in the Championship table, which puts them under pressure to start finding some form soon.
