Aston Villa signed the French defender way back in January.

Aston Villa boss Dean Smith has told the club’s YouTube channel that Frederic Guilbert is impressing him in training.

The French defender arrived at Bodymoor Heath this summer after originally joining Aston Villa in a £5 million deal in January [The Birmingham Mail].

His arrival has been somewhat overshadowed by the various exciting signings that Smith has made in recent weeks.

But the Villans boss is liking the look of the 24-year-old nevertheless.

He told the club’s YouTube channel: “I’ve obviously been to watch Freddy before. We tracked him. I went on the ill-fated day when he got sent off to watch him!

“He’s a very, very good full-back and he’s impressing me everyday in training.”

Guilbert can play centre-back and right-back, but it’s very likely that he’ll be deployed in the latter position.

Smith has signed a rake of central defenders this summer, including Ezri Konsa, Tyrone Mings and Kortney Hause, so it’s unlikely that the Aston Villa manager will be playing the Frenchman centrally.

Smith’s side kick off their pre-season preparations with a clash away to Minnesota United on Thursday morning and it’ll be interesting to see if the full-back is given a game.
