Dean Smith responds to Aston Villa job speculation

Aston Villa are reportedly considering Dean Smith as they look for Steve Bruce’s successor at Villa Park.

In comments reported by the Express and Star, Dean Smith has suggested that he has no plans to leave Brentford for the Aston Villa post following Steve Bruce’s departure.

Bruce was sacked in the wake of their 3-3 draw with the Championship’s bottom side Preston North End on Tuesday which leaves the Villans 13th in the table, one point closer to the bottom three than top spot.

The Express and Star reports that Smith is thought to be one of the candidates that may be considered for the role. But the Bees boss has insisted that he will not be leaving Griffin Park despite his connections to Villa.

“There’s going to be speculation about many people,” said Smith, as reported by the Express and Star. “They put two and two together and come up with five. My job is Brentford and that’s all I am interested in.

“There’s always going to be speculation; my dad was a steward and I was brought up a Villa fan but I’m not sure they are going to give Prince William the job are they? I’ve said it many times; this is a fantastic job and I enjoy it here. There’s nothing that has made me change my mind since I have worked here. I have no plans on leaving this club because it is a great club to work for.”

Smith would have been an excellent appointment and one that the fans largely seem to be in favour of.

He has built on the progress that Brentford made before his arrival and has turned the Bees into one of the sides that regularly find themselves at the right end of the table and arguably play some of the best football in the division.

And while it is probably no surprise that Smith has distanced himself from the role at this stage, the emphatic denial of any interest suggests that Villa will have to pull something serious out of the bag if they decide to make the Bees boss their number one target further down the line.
