Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn is being linked with Manchester United.

Dean Smith, Manager of Aston Villa gives a thumbs up prior to the Premier League match between Aston Villa and Burnley FC at Villa Park on September 28, 2019 in Birmingham, United Kingdom.

Aston Villa boss Dean Smith has told The Mirror that Manchester United will get a ‘short, swift reply’ if they come calling for midfielder John McGinn.

Villa swooped to land McGinn in the summer of 2018, beating Celtic to secure his signature after impressing with Hibernian.

The midfielder played a key role in Villa’s promotion to the Premier League last season, notching nine goals and 12 assists for Dean Smith’s side.

If anyone had concerns about how the 24-year-old would fare in the Premier League, those fears have been alleviated as McGinn has starred early this season with three goals and one assist.

McGinn also bagged a hat-trick for Scotland on Sunday afternoon, helping thrash San Marino 6-0 at Hampden Park, and speculation now surrounds his future at Villa Park.

ESPN report that Manchester United are keen on McGinn, and whilst they may have to wait until next summer, they’re still thinking about exploring a January move.

Villa undoubtedly want to keep McGinn, and ahead of facing Brighton and Hove Albion today, boss Smith has offered his view on the situation.

Smith has suggested that big clubs like United won’t get much encouragement if they do want McGinn, whilst claiming his value has ‘shot up’ since joining Villa for just £2.75million.

“The big clubs can come calling but they’ll get a short, swift reply! He’s a player we want here at Aston Villa,” said Smith. “His value shot up from the moment he stepped out onto the Villa Park pitch and showed just what a player he is. He has an unbelievable energy level and a big, big heart, but people don’t see the technical side of it as well – he’s got that in abundance.”

“He’s a really top player and pivotal to us getting promoted last season. He’s continued that form in the Premier League and his value would have certainly shot up,” he added.
