Aston Villa played out a bonkers 5-5 draw with Nottingham Forest on Wednesday night.

Aston Villa boss Dean Smith has thanked fans for sticking with the team and ‘seeing what we’re trying to do’ after the ridiculous game against Nottingham Forest.

Villa went into the game on a high after beating bitter rivals Birmingham City 4-2 on Sunday, but few could have expected the bizarre showing at Villa Park.

Goals from Lewis Grabban and Joao Carvalho had Forest 2-0 up inside six minutes, but by the 15 minute mark, Villa were level thanks to a Tammy Abraham brace.

Matty Cash put Forest back in front, Abraham equalised again from the penalty spot, only for Joe Lolley to slam Forest into a 4-3 lead after the break.

Tobias Figueiredo was sent off for Forest before Abraham grabbed his fourth and Anwar El Ghazi put Villa in front for the first time, only for Grabban to snatch an equaliser in a 5-5 draw.

It was certainly a game for the neutrals, and Villa boss Smith spoke after the game, telling the Birmingham Mail that he felt Villa were in control of the game and noted that his side had far more shots on goal.

Smith added that he was devastated for his players, but really appreciated that the Villa fans are doing, sticking with the team and seeing what Smith is trying to do in making Villa a little more expansive going forward than they were under Steve Bruce – the only problem is leaking goals at the other end.

“I always felt we were in control of the game,” said Smith. “We’ve had 26 attempts compared to their 8. I’m devastated for the players. But I appreciate the home crowd for seeing what we’re trying to do here,” he added.
