Aston Villa left back Matt Targett picked up an injury last night.

Dean Smith, manager of Aston Villa looks on prior to the Carabao Cup Second Round match between Crewe Alexandra and Aston Villa at Gresty Road on August 27, 2019 in Crewe, England.

Aston Villa boss Dean Smith has told the club’s official website that he is expecting news on Matt Targett’s injury today.

Villa headed to Crewe on Tuesday night, taking on the League Two side in the Carabao Cup – and they ran out convincing winners.

Villa were 3-0 up by half time, as Ezri Konsa opened the scoring before Conor Hourihane hit a brace to leave the visitors in a commanding position.

Keinan Davis and Frederic Guilbert got themselves on the scoresheet too, before Ryan Wintle pulled one back for Crewe late on.

Jack Grealish completed the scoring for Villa, sealing a 6-1 victory for Smith’s side – but it wasn’t all good news for Villa.

Left back Targett was substituted in the first half, having picked up a hamstring injury after finally being given a first competitive start for Villa.

Smith has now admitted that Villa are expecting news today, and are hoping that it’s not as bad as first feared having brought him off as quickly as they possibly could.

“He felt his hamstring,” said Smith. “We are hoping it’s not as bad as what can be feared with a hamstring injury. He didn’t do it when he was crossing or sprinting. He actually did it with a pass. We have brought him off as quick as possible and we’ll have the prognosis tomorrow,” he added.

This injury comes at the worst time for Targett. He’s been looking to establish himself at Villa since his £17million move from Southampton this summer (Birmingham Mail), but Neil Taylor has kept him out.

This was his first big chance to show that he should be starting, and instead, it’s ended in injury. That’s a major blow for Villa and Targett, who really didn’t need a spell on the sidelines as he looks to usurp Taylor.
