Aston Villa conceded two late goals during their defeat to Liverpool on Saturday.
Dean Smith has hit out at senior referee Johnathan Moss for his officiating during Aston Villa’s 2-1 defeat to Liverpool on Saturday afternoon.
The Villa manager stated that he has ‘never seen’, during his managerial career, ‘big teams’ getting the decisions, but he felt that on Saturday that changed and decisions were falling in Liverpool’s favour.
In the second half, it did seem as though the fouls awarded were heading in only Liverpool’s direction, which wasn’t impressing the pretty vocal Villa Park crowd.
Speaking to BBC Radio West Midlands after the game, Smith questioned the build-up to Liverpool’s winner and the officiating of Moss on the day.
“The referee has decided to give them a free-kick on the edge of the box after playing on and letting them have a shot,” Smith told Radio WM. “I thought he was inconsistent. I thought the officials were inconsistent if I am honest.
“I have never seen it before where people say the big teams get decisions. I think that was the case today. There were certainly free-kicks going one way and not the other.”
For large periods of the game, it did seem as though Villa were heading for all three points and potentially ending Liverpool’s unbeaten record in the Premier League.
But Sadio Mane inspired them to all three points, as he first provided Andy Robertston with a cross for the equaliser before his glancing header from a corner sealed all the points for his team.
Villa and Smith will no doubt feel hard done by as they would have felt that their performance during the match, at the very least, warranted them securing a point.
