Aston Villa boss Dean Smith will be looking to bolster his squad in January, with reports linking the club with Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Kortney Hause.

Dean Smith has honestly stated that he has ‘no idea’ whether Aston Villa have made a bid for Wolves defender Kortney Hause.

The Express & Star reported that centre-back Hause is closing in on becoming Villa’s second signing of the January transfer window.

Villa, who are chasing promotion to the Premier League, dented their hopes of finishing in the playoffs again after their 2-2 draw at home to QPR on New Year’s Day.

Tommy Elphick, who Villa recalled from his loan spell at Hull City, played alongside James Chester at the heart of the club’s defence as their defensive problems continued.

After the match, Smith commented on the speculation surrounding the Premier League player as he explained the details of Villa’s transfer dealings.

“I have no idea if we have made a bid for anyone,” Smith told BBC Radio WM as posted on their official Twitter account.

“That’s down to Suso (Sporting Director) and we look at players and then Suso and Christian (CEO) will get down to details. But we really don’t speak about any players unless we signed them.”

Redbridge-born Hause has only played two EFL Cup matches for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side this season and has remained on the bench for large parts of the season in the Premier League.

If he were to put pen-to-paper at Villa Park then he would add much-needed balance and depth in Smith’s struggling backline.

Left-footed Hause would join the likes of Chester, Elphick and the injured Tuanzebe as potential candidates for Villa’s centre-back spots – whilst he can also operate as a left-back, with Neil Taylor the only recognised player in that position.
