Aston Villa boss Dean Smith has told the club’s official website that left back Matt Targett should be ready to play against Norwich City.

Villa drew 2-2 at home with Burnley on Saturday afternoon, and after leading twice, Villa ended up only being able to claim a point at Villa Park.

Smith will be frustrated with that inability to hold onto the lead, and he will be hoping for better in a crucial game against fellow newly-promoted side Norwich this weekend.

Smith has admitted that defender Tyrone Mings has taken a knock but should be fine to play, and went into a little more depth about summer signing Targett.

The left back – signed from Southampton for £17million (The Telegraph) this summer – had been struggling with injury in the early stages of his time with Villa, and had only made Carabao Cup appearances before the Burnley game.

His Premier League debut for Villa lasted 61 minutes, but he was then taken off through injury, leaving fans to worry that the 24-year-old may be on the sidelines again.

Now, Smith has admitted that Targett hasn’t actually trained so far this week, but with no issues arising from a hamstring scan, he is expected to play against Norwich this weekend.

“Matt Targett hasn’t trained yet since the weekend,” said Smith. “But nothing showed up on the scan in terms of a hamstring issue, which is really pleasing. However, he certainly felt something so we’ve got be very cautious with him. But he will start training on Wednesday ready for the Norwich game,” he added.
