Dean Saunders suggests Daniel Sturridge for West Ham United

Daniel Sturridge was released by Liverpool this summer as a TalkSport pundit has backed him to potentially join West Ham United this summer.

Dean Saunders has suggested that West Ham United should sign Daniel Sturridge following his release from Liverpool because if he stays fit he thinks he will be the ‘best deal of the summer’.

Striker Sturridge is currently a free agent after his contract at Anfield expired last month as he is yet to find a new club with pre-season already underway ahead of the new season.

The Hammers are in need of some attacking talent following the departures of a number of strikers, with the club seemingly close to securing the services of Eintracht Frankfurt striker Sebastien Haller, according to Sky Sports.

Speaking to Final Word on TalkSport (14/07/2019) former Wales striker Saunders threw Sturridge’s name in the hat as West Ham search for more attacking options.

“He’s on a free isn’t he Daniel [Sturridge],” Saunders told TalkSport. “He’ll be wanting what 75k-a-week? So probably if you’re Pellegrini, you sit down and look at the deal. So, let’s have a look at his appearances. And let’s have a look at his injury record then let’s talk to him and see how determined he is. Let’s sit across the table so I can see his eyes.

“Is the £75k-a-week wages going to be a waste? Is he going to be injured? Let’s give him a medical and see everything about him before we commit ourselves because we could be wasting £75k-a-week.

“But if he’s fit, he could be the best deal of the summer.”

If West Ham can push the Haller deal over the line then he’ll no doubt be Manuel Pellegrini’s main man up top ahead of the new Premier League campaign.

But that doesn’t mean that the East London club will not need more attacking options because if they are to progress next season then they need attacking depth.

A player of Sturridge’s age, 29, and recent injury record would put off a lot of teams in England’s top-flight, as a move to West Ham might not be suitable for him because he wouldn’t be their number one striker if Haller signs.
