Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez is frustrated with the lack of transfer activity at St James’ Park.
Dean Saunders spoke to talkSPORT yesterday, and explained why he believes there will be trouble ahead for the Magpies, with the club seemingly reluctant to back Benitez in the transfer market.
Newcastle have made four signings so far during the off-season, bringing in Jacob Murphy, Javi Manquillo, Florian Lejeune, and Christian Atsu, but the former Liverpool, Inter Milan and Real Madrid boss undoubtedly expected more.
And Saunders suggested that these are worrying times at St James’ Park, when speaking on talkSPORT, and warned the club that Benitez will not tolerate being sold up the river, under any circumstances whatsoever:
“The conversation when they appointed him would have been ‘come and get us back up, we’ll give you a good contract. When you do get us back up we’ll let you spend this amount of money. The problem is, that spending isn’t happening at the moment. Benitez, the way he is, doesn’t mess around. There’s a car crash coming at Newcastle.”
Despite the Magpies suffering two relegations over the past eight years, they are still considered as one of the country’s biggest clubs, although the board will have to start behaving in a manner that befits that reputation.
With just under four weeks until the summer transfer window slams shut, Benitez will surely be demanding the signings of certain players, and as Dean Saunders highlighted, if this does not happen, his future at the club could very much be in jeopardy.
The problem for the Toon is that once the season kicks off next weekend, it will become even harder to sign players, and there must be genuine concern at Newcastle that they have left it too late.
