The veteran striker has continued to impress for Sunderland this season.
Speaking to BBC Sport Final Score, former Premier League forward Dean Saunders has praised Sunderland’s Jermain Defoe, saying he thinks the veteran is a world-class player.
The striker was in fine form last season, bagging 18 goals in all competitions and almost single-handedly keeping the Black Cats in the top flight.
He has started this season in similarly fine form, with seven goals in the Premier League to date.

His performances have continued to earn widespread praise, with many believing that Defoe should make a return to the England squad.
Saunders is one of those who believes just that and has labelled the striker as world-class.
“It’s a bit of a mystery to me that he’s never played for a team that is going to win the Championship,” he told BBC’s Final Score.
“For me, he is one of my favourite players, and I think he should have been in the England squad in the summer. Jermain Defoe scores in any game of football, and I think he is world-class.”

It will be interesting to see if Defoe can make a return to the England set-up in the future.
England have plenty of options up front at present and the Sunderland star is arguably far down the current pecking order.
However, if the likes of Jamie Vardy continue to struggle then it will become impossible to continue ignoring Defoe, especially if he keeps adding to his goal tally this season for the Black Cats.
