Newcastle United are reportedly edging closer to appointing Steve Bruce as Rafa Benitez’s replacement.
Dean Saunders has claimed that Newcastle United supporters will ‘forgive’ Steve Bruce for managing Sunderland because ‘deep down’ he is a Newcastle fan.
During the early part of his career, Corbridge-born Bruce, who grew up a Geordie supporter, went onto manage Sunderland, as his potential appointment at St James’ Park may just dampen the already downbeat mood from the Toon Army supporters.
The Telegraph have claimed that Newcastle are poised to appoint Bruce as their next manager and they are hoping the Sheffield Wednesday boss can join them for their pre-season tour of China next week.
Speaking to the Alan Brazil Breakfast Show on TalkSport (10/07/2019 at 7:15 am), Saunders thinks that Bruce’s problem, if appointed Newcastle manager, won’t be that he once walked the touchlines of their rivals.
“Well, he was a Newcastle fan as a boy,” Saunders told TalKSport. “Deep down he is a Newcastle fan, so I think they’ll forgive him [for being Sunderland manager].
“Don’t get be wrong that is a brilliant job to get, but when you sit down and have a meeting with the owners ‘how much money are you going to give me? because I am going to get the sack otherwise’.
This time last summer, Bruce had just lost a play-off final as Aston Villa manager and the Midlands outfit were heading into a financial storm.
Bruce’s job was on the line, and after new ownership, he stayed on at the club before being sacked in October. He then took the reigns at Sheffield Wednesday after the turn of the year.
Now, the former Manchester United defender, who last managed in England’s top-flight with Hull City, could find himself making a return in an unexpected manner.
