Dean Saunders has remarkably claimed that Chelsea’s Callum Hudson-Odoi should go to Leeds United ‘for a year’ in order to gain valuable experience in a ‘tough league’.

The 18-year-old winger recently made his England debut when he came off the bench during the Three Lions 5-0 win over the Czech Republic before making his first start in the 5-1 win at Montenegro on Monday.

Over these past few months, the highly-rated attacker has attracted the interest of Europe’s elite, including Bayern Munich, who had a number of bids rejected for him during the January transfer window, according to Sky Sports.

Putting all that in mind, Saunders’ comments made on Alan Brazil’s Sports Breakfast Show (28/03/2019 at 6:30 am) will now seem pretty jaw-dropping if you have been watching Hudson-Odoi’s rise in recent months.

“I would say this season, watch, learn and listen to the manager, listen to the coaches and listen to the players,” Saunders told talkSPORT.

“I just said, he could go and play for Leeds for a year. Play for a big club in the Championship, playing against men in a tough league. It’s not easy playing in that league.”

There is no doubt that Hudson-Odoi is too good to play in the second tier of English football as many Chelsea supporters would like to see him earn more starts at Stamford Bridge.

It is likely that Hudson-Odoi could come up against Leeds next season because they are in with a chance of earning promotion to the Premier League.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side are sitting third in the Championship table, one point off second-placed Sheffield United as they will be hoping to avoid the dreaded play-offs at the end of the campaign.

Nonetheless, over the course of the season, Hudson-Odoi has played 19 games in all competitions, coming off the bench on six occasions in the Premier League [transfermarkt].
