HITC Sport understands Chesterfield are keen on appointing their former player, currently assistant at Bristol City, as manager.
Bristol City assistant manager Dean Holden is the leading contender for the vacant manager’s job at Chesterfield, HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club.
Chesterfield are searching for a new manager after they parted company with Danny Wilson and assistant manager Chris Morgan last weekend following a poor run of form.
The Spireites are currently in the League One relegation zone after winning just one of their last six matches and are facing a real fight to avoid relegation.

A number of names have been linked with the vacancy, but sources have told HITC Sport that Chesterfield are interested in former player Holden.
Holden, who had a one-year spell at Chesterfield between 2011/12 as a defender, is currently working as assistant head coach at Bristol City under Lee Johnson.
Holden had a three-month spell in charge of Oldham after Johnson’s departure from the club to Bristol City.

Holden worked as first-team coach at Walsall at the back end of last season as the club reached the League One play-offs before moving to Bristol City in November.
The 37-year-old, who has all his coaching badges, including the UEFA Pro Licence, is highly-regarded in coaching circles and is thought to be keen to become a manager in his own right again.
Bristol City are reluctant to lose Holden from their coaching staff and are ready to rebuff any move from Chesterfield in Holden.
