Payet has opened the door to a January departure from West Ham United.
Former West Ham United striker Dean Ashton has told Talksport that Dimitri Payet could be making a mistake if he opts to leave the club in January.
Payet appeared to open the door to a possible departure from the London Stadium when the transfer window reopens, with a number of Champions League clubs said to be circling.
The France star arrived at West Ham in 2015 from Marseille and shone as the Hammers finished seventh in last season’s Premier League, earning him a spot in the division’s team of the year.
However, with Slaven Bilic’s side teetering above the relegation places this term, Payet could be tempted to move on if an opportunity arises.
“You only get one career, you only get one chance to reach the goals you want to reach,” Ashton told Talksport. “If he feels he has to move away to do that then maybe he does, but that’d be a real shame because of the platform West Ham have given him and the status he’s got.
“He’s probably played the best football he’s ever played at West Ham. It might just be a little mistake if he does leave.
I really hope he doesn’t because he’s been absolutely fantastic for West Ham and maybe he’ll see what West Ham have done for him and how they’ve progressed his career and he’ll stay.”
Ashton also passed comment on out of favour Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas, who has been mentioned as a possible Hammers arrival – albeit not as a like for like Payet replacement.
And the 32-year-old said: “Obviously if they’re looking at Cesc, who isn’t playing at Chelsea, then he’d be a fantastic addition.”
Fabregas, who began his career at Arsenal, has won league titles in both Spain and England, with Barcelona and Chelsea, respectively.
The 29-year-old was also part of Spain’s team that won three straight international tournaments, including the 2010 World cup.
