West Ham United snapped up Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere on Monday – but not everybody is happy with the deal, as former striker Dean Ashton has been hugely critical.
The Hammers had already tied up deals for Lukasz Fabianski, Ryan Fredericks and Issa Diop earlier in the transfer window, but then pounced to land midfielder Wilshere on Monday afternoon.
The 26-year-old – who grew up a Hammers fan – was on the books with Arsenal since arriving from Luton Town in 2001, and whilst he was tipped for stardom in North London, injuries halted his progress.
Wilshere moved on this summer as his Arsenal contract expired, and left the Emirates Stadium having made nearly 200 appearances for the Gunners – but will now be facing them next season.
The England international – who missed out on a spot at the World Cup – has made a short move to East London, joining West Ham on a three-year contract to boost Manuel Pellegrini’s options.
Wilshere will be hoping to get his career back on track when he starts with the Hammers, and most fans are excited to see a clearly talented player in action, as long as his injuries don’t haunt him yet again.
However, not everybody is a fan of the move. Last week, former Hammers favourite Dean Ashton was quoted by The Express last week as saying that signing Wilshere would be a waste of time due to his injury history.
Now, Ashton has been asked on Twitter just why he is so negative about the deal, and he responded by suggesting that Wilshere is quality when fit, but doesn’t have the pace and athleticism that West Ham need, and noted that averaging 13 league games a season won’t be good enough for the Hammers.
