Tammy Abraham started for Aston Villa as they were beaten by Brentford on Wednesday night.
Dean Ashton has hit out at Aston Villa ace Tammy Abraham for his ‘unnatural’ fall in the penalty area during his side’s 1-0 defeat to Brentford on Wednesday night at Griffin Park.
In the second half, midfielder Glenn Whelan whipped in a ball to Abraham’s feet, with the Chelsea loanee changing direction and his left foot clipping the back of opposition defender Julian Jeanvier heels, which resulted in him going to ground.
Earlier on in the day, as reported by BBC Sport, West Brom striker Dwight Gayle was charged for ‘successful deception of a match official’ during his side’s draw with Nottingham Forest on Tuesday night.
Former West Ham player Ashton mentioned the Gayle dive but insisted that these type of incidents occur all the time as he was critical of Abraham for his actions.
“I wasn’t [happy with Abraham],” Ashton told EFL on Quest on 13/02/2019 at 11:10 pm. “I think I have to mention it because West Brom fans will feel well Dwight Gayle’s been punished when there is this type of thing going on all the time.
“This is so unnatural in the way that Tammy Abraham goes down. That’s not a normal way to go down to the floor. Gayle deserves the punishment that he’s received, but it [diving/going to ground easily] happens all the time.”
In the game in itself, the Bees dominated both halves and created numerous chances in the game, with striker Neal Maupay scoring a stoppage-time winner.
Villa did have a number of big opportunities of their own, with Albert Adomah putting his effort wide when put through on goal and Conor Hourihane seeing his effort saved following a swift counter-attack.
As a result of that defeat, Smith’s side remain seven points adrift of the play-off places as it is looking highly unlikely that they will secure a top-six finish this term.
They host near-neighbours West Brom this Saturday, with the two teams recording an entertaining 2-2 draw during their reverse fixture in December.
