Speaking on the Transfer Window Podcast, journalist Ian McGarry has shared what he knows about Aaron Ramsey and his recent links to Newcastle.
The journalist claimed that the Magpies are indeed interested in the midfielder, while Juventus are keen to get rid of him.
Indeed, McGarry claims that Juve are ready to pay him off to leave the club, and while Newcastle are keen, Ramsey has some very specific demands from the Magpies.
What’s been said about Ramsey?
McGarry shared what he knows about Ramsey and Newcastle.
“Conversations we have had here at The Transfer Window Podcast about Aaron Ramsey. Two things are very clear, his playing time at Juventus has been almost non-existent, while his salary is very high and as a result Max Allegri and Juventus would like the player to leave and in order to do so they’re willing to facilitate a move for the player by not asking for a fee,” McGarry said.
“Ramsey’s wages would be a problem to match for any other club recruiting a player of his age. However, Ramsey wants to leave and he wants first-team football. He realises he has the opportunity to play in the World Cup finals in Qatar, and at the age of 30, his last contract at a high level is a priority. Juventus are willing to compensate him for leaving to get him off their wage bill, and there is interest from the Premier League, and one of those clubs is Newcastle United.”
“Speaking to people close to Ramsey, the one question I had was whether or not he’d be contemplated having to play in the Championship next season. I think there would have to be some sort of clause in the contract that allowed him to, if a suitable offer came in, or if they would tear up the contract for him to leave and go to a different club.
“That could be a dealbreaker for Newcastle because the new owners don’t want to feel like they’re being insulted or slighted by a player who sees them as a stepping stone. So I think that could be a stumbling block or a dealbreaker if they couldn’t negotiate that kind of deal that allows Ramsey the chance to leave after just six months should Newcastle not survive.”
Worth the risk?
Ramsey would only be willing to join Newcastle if he was offered an escape route upon relegation, so is signing him worth the risk?
In our view, it is. Newcastle will be fine in the long-term, their owners are the richest in the world and any short-term deals that backfire probably won’t have too much of an impact.
Ramsey is a player good enough to keep them up, and losing him in the summer wouldn’t be the Magpies’ biggest worry if they were to be relegated.
Sometimes in football it’s worth rolling the dice, and when you’re backed by multi-billionaires, gambling a few million isn’t actually that much of a risk.
