Fabrizio Romano has dropped a big Newcastle United transfer update, providing fresh information on their attempt to sign Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid.

Newcastle have been linked with former Burnley and Tottenham right-back Trippier for some time, but things have really started moving recently.

Newcastle transfer update dropped

Earlier this week, Eurosport reported that the Magpies were confident of agreeing terms with the 31-year-old, although it was claimed that some clauses would have to be inserted into any prospective deal in case they were to be relegated at the end of the season.

Then, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano asserted on Twitter that Trippier was top of Newcastle’s right-back wish list, with Atletico braced for an official bid.

His latest update, issued via the same medium on Friday evening, reads as follows:

‘Deal in progress between Newcastle and Atletico Madrid for Kieran Trippier as said here yesterday. Talks ongoing, club still confident to sign him soon.’

‘Waiting for the official, final bid.’

Magpies closing in on Trippier deal

This is exciting news for Newcastle fans just hours before the turn of the year.

With the likes of Manchester United also credited with interest [The Sun] and Trippier contracted to current La Liga champions Atletico until 2023, it appeared to be a long shot when the links first emerged.

It now looks like it could really happen, though, and it would be a big statement of intent if Newcastle were able to bring in the England international early in the transfer window.

Trippier missed a run of fixtures from November into early December with a shoulder injury, but has played the full 90 minutes of each of Atletico’s last two La Liga matches, so he is fit and ready to go if Newcastle manage to pull off the deal.
