Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea has had a World Cup which he will want to quickly forget.
The Spanish international saw his side crash out in a shock upset to Russia on penalties and had a disappointing tournament on a personal level, making just one save in four games—the fewest of any goalkeeper who has played at least three games in a World Cup since 1966.
Considered by many the best keeper in the world, the 27-year-old performed fantastically for his club last season, leading the Premier League in clean sheets (18).
De Gea couldn’t carry that form into the World Cup and looked shaky from the start, making a huge mistake for Portugal’s second goal in their tournament opener.
While United fans won’t be happy to see their number one perform so poorly, his under-par World Cup may be an ideal scenario.
The Spaniard has been a long-term target of Real Madrid, coming very close to joining Los Blancos in the summer of 2015, but has been scapegoated by the Spanish media following the World Cup failure.
The Spanish fans were also quick to criticise De Gea and following the 3-3 draw with Portugal he hit back, telling the Mirror that he doesn’t “see much that they support me from Spain”.
The toxic and unfriendly atmosphere in Spain will surely do little to tempt De Gea toward Madrid, and with a new five-year-deal reported to be close by the Mirror, the Old Trafford faithful can expect to see him between the posts moving forward.
