When Virgil van Dijk suffered a long-term injury in October, it hit those at Anfield pretty hard given the importance the Liverpool defender has on the team.

But many weeks later, Jurgen Klopp wouldn’t have believed his luck when Van Dijk’s partner in crime, Joe Gomez, then joined the Dutchman in the treatment room after a freak injury in England training.

All of that sounded the transfer rumour alarm about how Liverpool will dip into the January market for a centre-back.

One name that has been continually touted to join the Premier League champions is RB Leipzig’s rising star, Dayot Upamecano, as reported by the Mirror.

There’s no reason why Liverpool wouldn’t be in for a player of Upamecano’s qualities given that he plays in the Champions League and at the age of, 22, he has a lot of time to develop.

Liverpool’s trophies under Jurgen Klopp

  1. Champions League

    2018/19

  2. UEFA Super Cup

    2019

  3. FIFA Club World Cup

    2019

  4. Premier League

    2019/20

Plus, his towering figure allows him to be dominant in the air, he has a calming presence to his game and like the conveyor belt of centre-back’s coming through today, he can play out from the back.

But a potential deal for the Frenchman might not happen next month because Liverpool can sign him in the summer when his £35 million release clause comes into effect (Bild).

Added with that, the emergence of Rhys William has perhaps provided Klopp with food for thought that he needs to change his mind about dipping into the market.

If Liverpool weren’t sitting top of the tree and the likes of Williams weren’t shining bright then it may have been worth the risk to sign the player.

Plus, as Upamecano is still developing himself, especially on the international stage with France, perhaps it’s best he spends a further six month with Leipzig before Liverpool go hunting.

But that still leaves the champions on edge because one more injury at the back and Klopp will be banging his head against the wall.
