The Sunderland manager suggests how Celtic can win against Barcelona in the Champions League this week.
Sunderland manager David Moyes has explained to Herald Scotland how Celtic can get the better of Barcelona this week.
Scottish Premiership giants Celtic will take on Spanish powerhouse Barcelona away from home at Camp Nou in the Champions League on Tuesday evening.
Barca will head into the Group C game as favourites, and not many will expect the Bhoys to even pick up a point.
Former Everton manager Moyes, now in charge of Premier League club Sunderland, has advice for Celtic on how to win against Luis Enrique’s side.
Back in January 2015, Real Sociedad defeated Barcelona 1-0 at the Anoeta Stadium in San Sebastian in La Liga.
Moyes was then in charge of Sociedad, and the Scotsman has advice for Celtic ahead of their Champions League game against the Blaugrana on Tuesday evening.
“It was a brilliant night,” Moyes told Herald Scotland. “We scored a goal in the first minute from an own goal and we defended for our life. We just kept defending and kept defending – all defending.”
“You never want to set out that way but you will be kidding yourself if you think you can go and play Barcelona, you just can’t,” added the Sunderland boss.
“They have too much of the ball. With their style, you will get one or two opportunities, because they play open. But you are playing against something which is completely different, it is not normal.
“Brendan [Rodgers] might have a different plan, he will have his own ideas, but we found that it was very hard to get enough of the ball off them.”
Barcelona are clear favourites for Tuesday’s match, but Celtic will head into the encounter with confidence.
Brendan Rodgers’s side hammered Old Firm rivals Rangers 5-1 at Celtic Park in the Scottish Premiership on Saturday afternoon.
Meanwhile, Barcelona went down 2-1 to Alaves at Camp Nou in La Liga on Saturday evening.
