Tottenham Hotspur defender Ben Davies has told the club’s official website that he welcomes the competition for his place at left-back with Danny Rose, but wants what is best for the club.

The 24-year-old has established himself as Mauricio Pochettino’s preferred pick of late, starting 37 of the last 46 Premier League matches on the left side of defence over England international Rose.

It has seen former Leeds United academy product Rose had to make do with the odd league appearance, and instead play in the cup games and European outings.

But Davies will have delighted fans with his comments on the rivalry for positions by stating it is not about who plays, but indeed the shirt you are playing for.

“There is competition for places everywhere but everyone wants the best for the Club,” Davies said. “Whoever is on the pitch for a particular game, it’s about supporting them and wanting the best for the team.

“You saw Harry on the bench when we scored the second goal at Chelsea, a huge goal and it was as if he’d scored the goal himself. I’m sure he was devastated he couldn’t start a game like that.

“But that’s irrelevant when the whistle goes at the start of the game because it’s about Tottenham Hotspur, not the names on the teamsheet, but winning the game for the Club, no matter who is out there.”

The former Swansea City defender is expected to start against Stoke City on Saturday afternoon at the Britannia Stadium, as Spurs look to build on their eight-point advantage over fifth-placed Chelsea with another league win.
