Celtic goalkeeper Craig Gordon has been linked with a surprise move to Stamford Bridge.

Former Celtic ace Davie Provan has told The Scottish Sun that the Hoops should cash in and sell Craig Gordon to Chelsea as he can be replaced at Parkhead.

Gordon has emerged as a surprise target for the Blues during this window, and Sky Sports recently reported that the Bhoys had rejected a bid from the Premier League leaders for the 34-year-old.

But while Gordon has been a stalwart of the Celtic side since his arrival in 2014, Provan believes that it will benefit the Scottish Premiership outfit in the long run to allow the stopper to move to Stamford Bridge.

“In a team where he can go 90 minutes without having to make a save, he’s not indispensable,” he said, as reported by The Scottish Sun.

“No harm to the big man, but Dorus de Vries could step into his boots without anyone noticing.

“He should take Chelsea’s cash and use it to nail down the boys who really matter,” he would later add.

Although Provan is confident that Brendan Rodgers’ men will be able to cope without Gordon should he return to England around five years after he left Sunderland, Dorus De Vries’ form when he was called upon earlier in the campaign was arguably underwhelming.

And while that should not cost Celtic this season – they are surely too far in front in the league and too good in comparison with their rivals to suffer anything more than a brief blip – finding a long-term replacement for the Scotland international, or at least someone who can challenge and push De Vries, would surely be a smart idea ahead of the next campaign when they are likely to be back fighting for a place in the Champions League group-stages.
