It was a fairly busy January transfer window for Celtic, but Davie Provan is not convinced that it will have captured the fans’ imagination.

Charly Musonda of Celtic is seen during the Scottish Premier League match between Celtic and Heart of Midlothian at Celtic Park on January 30, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Davie Provan has told The Scottish Sun that Celtic fans should be distinctly unimpressed with the business that the Hoops did during the January transfer window, and suggested that there is some pressure on Charly Musonda to make a success of his time at Parkhead.

The Bhoys signed five players last month, with Musonda the marquee addition to the squad as he arrived from Chelsea on an 18-month loan. Meanwhile, Jack Hendry and Marvin Compper were signed on permanent deals, as was Lewis Morgan before he was loaned back to St Mirren for the rest of the season. Scott Bain was brought in on loan as cover for the injured Craig Gordon.

While that appears to be quite a decent window for the Scottish Premiership leaders, Provan has suggested that the Parkhead faithful have the right to ask some questions of the board following the deadline.

“Given the cash Peter Lawwell is sitting on, Celtic punters should be distinctly unimpressed by the Hoops’ lack of investment in the transfer window,” he told The Scottish Sun.

“Ahead of the Zenit St Petersburg clash, Celts’ ambition stretched no further than loan deals and promising youngsters.

“Brendan Rodgers has to hope Charly Musonda lives up to the hype.

“Older than established EPL youngsters like Marcus Rashford and Gabriel Jesus, Musonda now has to fulfil his potential. But you wonder why struggling Chelsea are leasing the 21-year-old for 18 months if they believed the midfielder could help them.”

While Rodgers may feel that he has added depth in the positions that needed bolstering, you can see where Provan is coming from given that Hendry and Musonda – and Morgan when he arrives – are players that Rodgers will be looking to see improvement and development from in the coming months.

Meanwhile, Compper is still awaiting his debut due to injury and Bain may be in line to spend the duration of his loan spell on the bench as Dorus De Vries’ understudy.

Having said that, Celtic did manage to keep hold of all of their important first-team players, including those who were linked with potential moves away, so that must be taken into consideration when assessing how successful a window it was. But with another league title looking set to be a formality this term, it may become clearer how strong their January performance was when they return to the European arena later this month.
