Davie Provan has told Go Radio – as per the Evening Times – that Everton have just signed a defender in Nathan Patterson, that is similar to Arsenal ace Kieran Tierney. Everton have paid Rangers £16million for Patterson.
Having only clocked up 27 senior appearances for the Gers after breaking into the senior side under Steven Gerrard, Patterson has joined Everton. It is believed a fee of £12million, plus £4million in installments, has been paid.
It is a record sale for Rangers. Patterson, who was a part of Scotland’s Euro 2020 squad, now has Seamus Coleman and Jonjoe Kenny for company. But Kenny is out of contract in the summer, and Coleman is now 33.
Speaking about Patterson’s move to Everton, Scottish pundit and ex-Celtic man Provan compared the new Toffees signing to Tierney. The latter has sparkled for Arsenal, since his £25million (BBC) move in August 2019.
“I see shades of Kieran Tierney about him,” Provan said. “I know he’s at a younger age than Kieran was when he made his move but I see similar potential. There’s such an assurance about him for such a young man.
“The only slight concern is that I don’t think Rafa Benitez will be there that much longer at Everton. Either way though, he has the ability to prove himself at Everton,” Provan continued, as quoted by the Evening Times.
Provan on Patterson: Everton star to use Arsenal ace Tierney as model?
Tierney has been worth every penny since his move from Celtic. But the difference is, that Tierney joined Arsenal after clocking up 170 appearances for the Hoops. He was sensational under Brendan Rodgers at Celtic.
Patterson is much more inexperienced and Everton fans must remember that, as he continues to learn his trade at Goodison Park. Yes, Patterson will be using Tierney as a model – but he is a few years from reaching that level.
The chances of Patterson even being first choice at Everton is unlikely, with Rangers captain James Tavernier keeping him out of the side at Ibrox. But he might get his debut against Hull in the FA Cup this weekend.
