Celtic are closing in on Paris Saint-Germain’s Timothy Weah.
Ex-Celtic winger and current pundit Davie Provan has told The Scottish Sun that he isn’t sure Timothy Weah is exactly what the Bhoys need right now.
The Bhoys lost 1-0 to Rangers last time out, meaning they are now level on points with the Gers at the top of the Scottish Premiership.
Celtic desperately need January additions to bolster Brendan Rodgers’ options, and landing at least one striker, possibly two, has to be the priority this month.
Leigh Griffiths is taking a break from the game, meaning Odsonne Edouard has been serving as Celtic’s only recognised centre forward in recent weeks.
Dunajska Streda star Vakoun Issouf Bayo appears to be one target, but the main name linked in recent weeks has been Paris Saint-Germain talent Weah.
The 18-year-old is looking for playing time, and France Football report that Weah has extended his contract with PSG and will be signing for Celtic on loan imminently.
Now though, ex-Celtic man Provan has suggested that Weah just doesn’t have the proven record Celtic need right now, and no matter how talented he may be, he just isn’t what Celtic are desperate for.
Provan urged Celtic to get their finger out in the transfer market, and wants an experienced striker in the mould of previous signings Craig Bellamy and Robbie Keane signed this month.
“With Rangers latest accounts showing a £14m loss the Ibrox board are limited in what they can give Gerrard in the transfer market,” said Provan. “On the other side of town Celts are much better equipped to strengthen but must get the finger out this time.”
“However talented Timothy Weah is, at 18 he doesn’t have the experience Celtic need right now. Rodgers needs someone who has been around the block. When Craig Bellamy and Robbie Keane signed, they arrived in Glasgow with a cast iron guarantee of goals,” he added.
