Glasgow Rangers received a boost this week, with James Tavernier signing a new contract at Ibrox.

Davie Provan has told The Scottish Sun that handing James Tavernier a new contract was a no-brainer for Rangers and that former boss Mark Warburton should have been done for theft when he landed the full-back for just £200,000 in 2015.

Tavernier has enjoyed an excellent spell at Ibrox, particularly this season. The right-back is certainly a contender to be considered the Gers’ best player this season after he seemingly took his game to another level.

That is why the news that he had signed a new contract with the Light Blues that will keep him with the club until 2021 has gone down so well amongst the fans, and Provan has suggested that Tavernier has to be considered as one of the club’s best signings in recent years.

“James Tavernier was the one who caught my eye,” he told The Scottish Sun when referring to the Scottish Cup tie with Ayr which Rangers won 6-1. “With his mobility and delivery, it was a no-brainer for Rangers to extend the 26-year-old’s contract.

“When Rangers paid Wigan just £200,000 for Tavernier, Mark Warburton should have been done for theft.”

There have not been too many occasions this term when Tavernier has not gone down as a contender for the man of the match award. He was exceptional in the Old Firm clash shortly before the winter break and has continued his excellent form following the resumption of the season.

It would have been absolutely no surprise if a host of clubs were plotting to make a summer move for the defender given the form that he has shown this term, so bringing an end to the surely-inevitable speculation before it has had a chance to get going is a major plus for Rangers.

With Tavernier committing his future to the Gers, it should only be a crazy offer that allows any speculation to start up again, so it is undoubtedly a fantastic statement from Rangers as they look to get back towards the summit in the Scottish Premiership.
