Tom Rogic seemed to surprise many by committing his future to Celtic by signing a new long-term contract with the Scottish Premiership champions.

Davie Hay has told the Evening Times that Celtic have done fabulously to get Tom Rogic tied down to a new long-term contract at Parkhead, insisting that the deals for the Australian, Kieran Tierney and Kristoffer Ajer act as superb statements from the Hoops.

Bhoys supporters would have been forgiven for fearing the worst regarding Rogic’s future with the Scottish Premiership champions. The Daily Record reported after the deal was signed that he had initially been holding back on talks and was attracting Premier League attention. A lot of signs seemed to point towards a summer exit.

However, the 25-year-old handed the club a major boost at the end of the season by committing his future to Celtic for another five years. And Hay has suggested that it is a fantastic accomplishment from the Hoops to get a deal done.

“Getting Tom Rogic on a long-term deal is a fabulous bit of business, particularly since most of us thought that the midfielder was waiting on the World Cup to come and go before making a decision on his future,” he said, as reported by the Evening Times.

“The playmaker is one of the players who can conjure something out of nothing and I don’t think he has scored a goal at Celtic that hasn’t been of the eye-catching variety.

Brendan Rodgers, manager of Celtic looks on ahead of the Scottish Cup Final between Motherwell and Celtic at Hampden Park on May 19, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

“Getting him along with the likes of Kristoffer Ajer and Kieran Tierney on long-term deals is fabulous and just tells you exactly where Celtic are at the moment.”

As Hay suggested, Rogic has that touch of brilliance in his game that often means that he produces a moment of real magic when he gets onto the ball. He scored every time he faced Rangers this past season – the only time the Hoops did not win against their bitter rivals came in the game that the attacking midfielder played no part in.

One of the concerns about Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic has been about whether the manager can keep the team together or whether their dominance was going to lead to sides picking off some of their most important players in the transfer window.

While some have moved on however, Rodgers deserves an enormous amount of credit for keeping the majority of the team and getting some of their most important players to agree to long-term contracts. It certainly suggests that Celtic’s control of the top flight is not going to disappear anytime soon.
