The Everton assistant coach Davide Ancelotti thinks that Dominic Calvert-Lewin is following in the footsteps of Filippo Inzaghi, David Trezeguet, Didier Drogba and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Calvert-Lewin has gone from strength to strength under the management of Ancelotti’s father, Carlo.

The Italian was only appointed in late December, but has already coaxed out more Everton goals from his number nine (19 in 30 appearances) than any of his predecessors.

It is perhaps no surprise given some of the strikers who were successful under Ancelotti senior prior to his arrival at Goodison Park, at clubs such as Juventus, AC Milan, Chelsea and Real Madrid.

And as far as his son is concerned, Calvert-Lewin is not dissimilar.

“For what we want he’s the best striker that we could have,” Ancelotti junior told The Training Ground Guru Podcast. “Because he’s a real finisher, he’s patient, he doesn’t need to drop a lot to touch the ball because all he wants to do is to score.

“He’s focused on to be in the box when needed and I think that the manager, in his career, has had these kind of strikers and these kind of characteristics, with his style of play they always did well. I think of Filippo Inzaghi, David Trezeguet, (Didier) Drogba, Crstiano Ronaldo, so all players that like to play on the last line, ready to score.”

Ancelotti junior, who revealed he grew up in the dressing rooms of his father’s clubs, first became part of the 61-year-old’s staff at Real Madrid, where he was employed as a fitness coach.

He was later appointed his assistant at Bayern Munich and followed him to Napoli, as well as Everton.

Everton fans – how good can Calvert-Lewin become?
