David Weir has given his take on Rangers defender Calvin Bassey on BT Sport 2 (10:12pm, November 25, 2021) after watching him in action for Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side at Ibrox.
Rangers got the better of Sparta Prague 2-0 at Ibrox in the Europa League on Thursday evening.
It was Van Bronckhorst’s first game in charge of the Gers.
The Dutchman recently replaced Steven Gerrard at Rangers.
The win in Group A saw Rangers progress to the next round of the Europa League.
Bassey started in central defence alongside Connor Goldson.
Former Rangers centre-back Weir was not particularly impressed.
Weir said on BT Sport 2 (10:12pm, November 25, 2021): “Calvin Bassey’s athleticism, his energy, he was all over the place, but he is not a natural centre-back. We can see that.”

How did Calvin Bassey play?
Bassey is only 21 and can play as a centre-back or as a left-back.
The Nigerian joined Rangers only in the summer of 2020 after leaving Leicester City.
The defender did relatively well against Sparta and rose to the challenge.
It was a physical test for Bassey, which he passed, and he looked decent on the ball as well.
It will be interesting to see if Bassey keeps his place in the Rangers team as the left-footed centre-back.
