Philippe Senderos could make his competitive debut for Rangers this weekend, according to David Weir.

Rangers assistant manager David Weir has been quoted by the Daily Star as saying that new signing Philippe Senderos has a chance to play against Celtic this weekend.

With experience needed at the back to compete with Rob Kiernan and Danny Wilson, Rangers moved to bring in Clint Hill on a free transfer from QPR, but still moved to snap up Senderos on deadline day last week.

The 31-year-old has been without a club all summer having left Grasshopper Zurich at the end of last season, but he trained with Rangers in August and clearly did enough to impress manager Mark Warburton and win a permanent deal at Ibrox.

Senderos brings bags of experience to Ibrox having played for some huge clubs during his career, including Arsenal, AC Milan, Everton and Valencia, whilst playing in three World Cups for Switzerland only adds to his impressive CV.

Senderos played for Rangers in their 7-0 friendly win over Linfield last weekend, but has yet to make his competitive debut for the Gers – and is in line to make his first league appearance on a huge stage.

Rangers take on Celtic this weekend in the Old Firm derby, and in a bid to tighten up a shaky defence – and include players with history of playing in big games – Rangers could turn to Senderos at Celtic Park

Ahead of Saturday’s game, Rangers assistant boss David Weir, who featured in plenty of Old Firm derbies during his playing days, has been speaking about the possibility of Senderos playing against Celtic.

As quoted by the Daily Star, Weir said that Senderos has impressed in training, and has a real chance of playing – but with a number of options in defence, Rangers will make a decision on their starting back line closer to kick off.

“He’s definitely got a chance of playing, he’s done well in training and in the game he’s played,” said Weir. “But we have got competition for places now. Danny Wilson, Rob Kieran and Clint Hill can all play in that position. We will see how training goes this week and make a decision closer to Saturday morning,” he added.
