Kyle Lafferty has played a bit part role for Rangers manager Steven Gerrard this season.

David Weir has questioned the consistency of Rangers striker Kyle Lafferty as he stated that he hasn’t had enough ‘good seasons’ during his career.

The 31-year-old has played a bit part role for Steven Gerrard this term, with key man Alfredo Morelos and January signing Jermain Defoe playing ahead of him in the pecking order.

During his career, Lafferty has played in Scotland’s top-tier, England’s top-tier for the likes of Hearts, Norwich City and Burnley.

Nonetheless, Lafferty’s former teammate, Weir shared some brutally honest thoughts on the experienced man, who has been played up front and out wide this season.

“Some players rise to the occasion and Kyle’s career has had lots of highlights and good games,” said Weir, as quoted by the Daily Record. “But probably not enough good seasons and consistency in his game.

“But everyone is different and when you’ve got good strikers like Jermain Defoe, Alfredo Morelos and Kyle it’s just about getting the blend right and when you need each player.

“The manager’s got really good options as there are different strengths, weaknesses and attributes they’ll be looking at to see what system suits what game.”

It is highly unlikely that Lafferty will break into Rangers starting XI in the near future given the form of Morelos and the qualities Defoe can bring to the table, either playing alongside the youngster or coming off the bench.

Nonetheless, over the course of the season, he has played 32 games in all competitions, scoring six goals and supplying his teammates with two assists [transfermarkt].

On Wednesday night, Rangers will host Dundee in the Scottish Premiership as they will be hoping to close the eight-point gap on leaders Celtic in the table.
