Lee Wallace was released by Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers.

Rangers manager Mark Warburton instructs Lee Wallace of Rangers during the Scottish Cup Semi Final between Rangers and Celtic at Hampden Park on April 17, 2016 in Glasgow, Scotland.

David Weir has told The Glasgow Evening Times that released Rangers star Lee Wallace could improve at QPR.

Mark Warburton snapped up his former Rangers captain in a Bosman move last week after he was released by the Gers.

The 31-year-old defender only made a handful of cameo appearances under Steven Gerrard last term.

Wallace, a left-back, was suspended by the club in April of 2018 following a verbal tirade toward then-manager Graeme Murty following a hefty defeat by Celtic.

He had helped the Ibrox side get back to the Scottish Premiership after being demoted to the fourth tier in 2012, and yet his departure was given no official acknowledgement by the Glasgow club.

“It’s disappointing but the people who know – you see all the messages from the fans and players who are supporting him – are well aware of what he’s done and how highly he’s thought of,” Weir, Warburton’s assistant in Glasgow, told The Glasgow Evening Times.

“The fans showed what they thought of him and Lee is sensible enough to know how it works. He knows the intricacies of some things that go on.

“There’s an opportunity for him to get better and do well. He’ll be excited by it as he’s missed a lot of football in the past few months as well. He’ll be champing at the bit.”

Wallace might be over 30, but there’s life in the old dog yet and he will prove as much in West London, playing under a manager who knows him well.
