Glasgow Rangers have endured a difficult season, but former Ibrox hero David Weir has praised some members of the squad.

Josh Windass of Rangers scores his sides first goal during the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership match between Rangers and Celtic at Ibrox Stadium on March 11, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

In comments reported by The Scotsman, former Rangers defender and assistant manager David Weir has suggested that Josh Windass, Wes Foderingham and James Tavernier are three Gers players who boast the potential that could allow them to go and play in the Premier League in the future.

With the campaign set to end in disappointment, with no trophies and a fight for second place on their hands, it appears that there is little for the Rangers supporters to cheer about right now, and there is much work ahead in the summer if the club are going to build on the promise that the squad have shown at times this term.

James Tavernier of Rangers controls the ball during the Betfred League Cup Quarter Final at Firhill Stadium on September 19, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Off the back of the Scottish Cup semi-final, the supporters would be forgiven for feeling particularly negative about the quality within the squad, but Weir – who was assistant when Windass arrived for just £50,000 in 2016 – has suggested that three of Graeme Murty’s squad have the quality to play at England’s highest level.

“He has the attributes,” he said, as reported by The Scotsman when talking about Windass’ potential to play in the Premier League.

Wes Foderingham of Rangers looks on during the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership match between Rangers FC and Celtic FC at Ibrox Stadium on September 23, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

“Physically he is more than capable of doing it and technically he is very good. It is about putting all the pieces together consistently but he definitely has all the attributes, as do Wes Foderingham and James Tavernier. There are people within the squad who can go and do that.”

It would not be particularly surprising if the Rangers fans struggled to agree with Weir’s assessment right now – but there have been points at various stages throughout the campaign when the three players have looked like stars.

Windass has scored 17 goals in all competitions, while Tavernier – who was arguably the best of a very bad lot at Hampden Park on Sunday – has scored seven and provided seven assists in the Scottish Premiership this term, and Foderingham has certainly enjoyed some bright periods.

It does appear however, perhaps in Foderingham’s and Windass’ cases in particular, that they have never quite been able to win over the entirety of the Rangers fanbase. But perhaps that frustration emerges due to the fact that they somewhat see where Weir is coming from and know how good the trio can be when they are at their best.
