Ibrox boss Graeme Murty’s future is in doubt at Rangers.
Rangers manager Graeme Murty’s future at Ibrox remains in doubt and former Light Blues defender David Weir believes beating Celtic on Sunday afternoon will boost his chances of keeping the job full-time, as quoted by the Evening Times.
Murty, 43, took over at Ibrox following the sacking of Pedro Caixinha and has remained in charge of the Scottish giants until now. Chairman Dave King has given the former Reading defender until the end of the season.
With the Gers in second and set to go head to head with Old Firm rivals Celtic this weekend in the Scottish Cup semi-final, Murty has certainly improved the Gers following Caixinha’s spell in charge at Ibrox.
Weir, who spent five years as a player and two as assistant manager at Rangers, believes finishing second and beating Celtic in the Scottish Cup will give Murty a huge chance of achieving the job on a permanent basis.
“We brought him in as an under-20s coach from under-18 football at Norwich so the jump has been really quick and far in a short period of time,” Weir said. “He has coped with that really well. He has been put in a difficult situation and he has handled it well.
“Rangers are competitive, they are fighting for second place so that will be a success this season and they are in the semi-final of the cup. Is he right man for the job? Time will tell but winning the semi-final and finishing second in the league will certainly help that.”
Murty’s January signings have certainly boosted the Gers, as he brought in Russell Martin, Sean Goss, Greg Docherty, Jamie Murphy and Jason Cummings.
The Gers were unlucky to lose 3-2 against the Hoops last time out despite taking the lead twice through Josh Windass and Daniel Candeias, and they will be hoping to go one better on Sunday in order to book their place in the final.
