David Weir has suggested to The Sunday Post that he was surprised when Rangers signed Allan McGregor in the summer of 2018 as they already had Wes Foderingham.

Rangers secured the services of McGregor on a free transfer in the summer of 2018 following the departure of the 37-year-old goalkeeper from Hull City in the Championship in England at the end of the 2017-18 campaign.

Foderingham was the first-choice goalkeeper at Rangers at the time, but following manager Steven Gerrard’s decision to bring McGregor back to Ibrox in the summer of 2018 for his second spell at the Gers, the 28-year-old now finds himself on the substitutes’ bench on most matchdays.

Former Rangers central defender and assistant manager Weir has suggested that he did not think that the Scottish Premiership club needed McGregor as they already had Foderingham.

Weir told The Sunday Post: “I was thinking that Wes was a really good goalkeeper, and wondered if that really was a position where Rangers needed to strengthen.

“But, with hindsight, you look at it as a great signing and a great decision by Steven Gerrard.

“I think even Wes will learn from that, from seeing Allan McGregor in big games, how he plays and how he approaches them and his manner within them.

“He has already been worth a few extra points for Rangers this season, and has definitely made some good saves.”

Scottish Cup tie

Rangers were in action at the weekend, as the Gers took on Aberdeen away from home in the Scottish Cup quarter-finals this past Sunday afternoon.

The tie ended 1-1 and there will now be a replay, and defender Joe Worrall was impressed with the display priced by McGregor.

Worrall told Rangers’ official website: “He nearly saved it (the penalty), he got a hand to it. But you know if you get beat you’ve got Greegsy behind you!

“You can’t count your chickens but he’s behind you and he fills you with confidence.”

The defender added: “It is in our hands, we said at half-time that we have got to turn it on and the ball is our court but now it is back in their court and they have got to come to Ibrox in front of 50,000 and deliver if they want to get through.”
