Rangers brought defender Connor Goldson to Ibrox this summer.
Former Rangers hero and assistant manager David Weir has told The Scottish Sun that he and Mark Warburton almost signed Connor Goldson for Nottingham Forest.
Goldson, 25, was Rangers’ most expensive signing this summer, as Steven Gerrard swooped to land him to lead his defence at Ibrox.
The centre back, who made his name with Shrewsbury Town, found first-team football hard to come by at Brighton last season, and decided to move on in search of first-team football in Glasgow.
So far, Goldson has been a rock in Gerrard’s defence, turning in outstanding performances to finally settle a back line which has been shaky ever since returning to the top flight in 2016.
Goldson will now be looking to kick on and become a hero at Rangers, but one former Gers captain has revealed that he was almost snatched away long before the Gers could sign him.
David Weir – a Rangers hero and former assistant manager of the club – has told The Scottish Sun that he and former Rangers boss Mark Warburton actually almost signed Goldson for Nottingham Forest.
Presumably in the summer of 2017 after Brighton’s promotion to the top flight, or in the lead up to the January transfer window, Weir revealed that a deal was ‘well down the line’ but didn’t go through.
Rangers have now managed to benefit from Warburton and Weir failing to land Goldson, and Weir added that he is ‘really surprised’ that Brighton let him sign for Rangers this summer.
“Mark and I were actually very close to signing Connor Goldson for Forest.” said Weir. “It was well down the line, we really liked him. I was really surprised that Brighton let him go permanently, but when I spoke to people there it was because they wanted him to play and be a success in his own right. They wanted to see him prosper and he’s doing that,” he added.
