Everton’s miserable form under David Unsworth continued as they slumped to a 4-1 defeat to Southampton on Sunday.
Everton caretaker manager David Unsworth told Sky Sports TV that he was “furious” with their “unacceptable performance” in losing 4-1 to Southampton on Sunday.
Gylfi Sigurdsson cancelled out Dusan Tadic’s opener with his first Toffees goal on the stroke of half time before another second-half capitulation allowed the Saints to run out easy winners.
Unsworth claimed that suspended top scorer Oumar Niasse could have made a difference to proceedings, but admitted that he could not defend his players at the final whistle.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Unsworth said: “It’s the manner of the goals that is killing us. We got back in with a great strike, but we missed Oumar Niasse and he should have been on the field.
“Things that are going against us is having an impact. But I cannot stand here and defend them, it was an unacceptable performance, the fans will be furious and so am I. It’s not good enough.
“It’s a massive week, what will be decided will be done by other people. It is important that senior players take responsibility. We are in a fight, we cannot shirk, we have to stand together and there is not enough of that at the moment.”
The result comes just three days after Everton were humiliated 5-1 by mid-table Serie A side Atalanta in the Europa League, and will surely end Unsworth’s caretaker tenure.
The Merseysiders have won only one of the seven games since Ronald Koeman’s sacking last month, and have even regressed under Unsworth, conceding 20 goals in that time.
Everton’s search for a new manager has been fruitless so far, with leading contenders Sam Allardyce and Watford boss Marco Silva no longer options according to Sky Sports.
But the board need to act before Wednesday’s trip to West Ham before too much damage is done.
