Everton’s young trio impressed in the Under-23s’ 1-1 draw against Southampton.
When Southampton beat Everton on Sunday, it was a teenager who took most of the credit, having impressed on his first team debut.
Afterwards Everton boss Ronald Koeman prompted raised eyebrows when he claimed to have not been aware of the man in question, Southampton’s Josh Sims, prior to his move between the two clubs in June.
The Dutchman, in the eyes of those fans he left behind, was economical with his use of young players while on the south coast, and that opinion seems to have followed him to Goodison Park.
Koeman, though, has not completely ignored Everton’s youths, handing three starts to Mason Holgate and as many sub appearances to Tom Davies – albeit totalling 40 minutes of football.
And if David Unsworth’s latest assessment is anything to go by, there could be more where those came from for Davies and co.
“Overall, it was a very good performance with some outstanding individual displays from the likes of Jonjoe Kenny, Liam Walsh and Tom Davies, who were as good as I’ve ever seen them,” Unsworth told the Liverpool Echo after his side’s 1-1 draw against the Saints.
With Everton’s senior side enduring a rotten run of form of late, they could perhaps do worse than to give the young ‘uns a go.
Whether Koeman will bow to the pressure, however, remains to be seen.
