Everton defender Matty Foulds is out of contract next summer.
Everton Under-23 boss David Unsworth has told The Liverpool Echo that he thinks Matty Foulds will leave the club at the end of the season.
The Toffees beat Southampton 2-1 on Saturday afternoon thanks to goals from Tom Davies and Richarlison, but it was the turn of Everton’s youngsters on Sunday.
Unsworth oversaw Sunday’s Premier League Cup tie with Plymouth Argyle, sealing a 1-1 draw, as Harry Charsley’s opener was cancelled out by Billy Clarke.
One member of Unsworth’s side was defender Foulds, who featured at left back as Lewis Gibson started in his preferred left-sided centre back role.
Foulds, 21, played the full 90 minutes and has been a regular for Everton’s Under-23’s this season, but his time at Goodison Park may be coming to an end.
The defender, who joined Everton from Bury in 2016, has yet to make the step up to the Everton first team, and it now simply looks like he won’t.
Foulds is out of contract at the end of the season, and at 21 he really needs to be out playing games rather than playing out of position – by Unsworth’s own admission – for Everton Under-23’s.
Unsworth has noted that he thinks Foulds will be leaving Everton at the end of the season, predicting his exit because he needs to forge a career elsewhere.
“He’s a steady player but he’s a great lad first and foremost,” said Unsworth. “He’s done a great job for us over the last couple of years. I would probably think that this is his last year at this level. He needs to forge a career for himself wherever that might be.”
“I still think his best position is left centre-back but because we don’t have a great deal of left-backs in the club we ask him to do a job for us that he can do quite comfortably but I’m sure he’d tell you he’s more of a left-sided centre-back. Needs must, unfortunately, but he’s fine,” he added.
