David Unsworth exposes Ronald Koeman error at Everton

David Unsworth made a number of changes to Everton’s line-up for his first game in charge.

David Unsworth has told the Liverpool Echo that his team selection was one of the reasons why Everton were able to look much more impressive against Chelsea than they have in recent weeks.

Unsworth has been placed in temporary charge at Goodison Park following Ronald Koeman’s dismissal earlier this week.

And although the former Toffees defender was unable to inspire his side to victory in his first match in charge, they did look much improved against Chelsea last night.

Everton were only narrowly beaten by the Blues at Stamford Bridge, as they fell to a 2-1 defeat.

And Unsworth has suggested that the fact that he recalled James McCarthy, Aaron Lennon and Kevin Mirallas to Everton’s team was a big reason behind their improved display.

“We spoke about the right time and where and how to press,” Unsworth said.

“I thought our pressing when we went in threes and fours was good.

“It’s not as good as I want it yet. It’s something I like to do, but certainly when you put James McCarthy back into the team and Aaron Lennon into the team, Kevin Mirallas who has great pace, when you change a few personnel and implement some sort of pressing game, you get the response we got tonight.”

During his time at the helm Koeman regularly ignored the talents of Mirallas and Lennon in favour of other options.

The Dutch boss preferred a more centralised formation, with Everton rarely playing with out and out wingers – much to the frustration of the Toffees supporters.

Everton’s next match comes against Leicester City at the weekend, when Unsworth will be hoping his side continues to show improvement.
