Henen’s existing Everton deal expires at the end of the campaign.

David Unsworth has insisted David Henen can still earn a new contract at Everton.

Henen is approaching the end of the three year deal he signed on his arrival from Olympiacos in 2015.

Despite the hype surrounding his move to Goodison Park, and his often impressive performances for Everton Under 23s, the winger has yet to make a competitive appearance for the Toffees’ senior team.

But speaking to the Liverpool Echo, second string boss Unsworth revealed Henen’s exit is far from a foregone conclusion.

“Absolutely, of course he can get a new one [contract] but performances will dictate that,” said the 44 year old.

“Monday night [versus Derby County] wasn’t his finest hour but he’s got pace, he scores a goal and when he’s at his best, he’s a real threat and has been absolutely fantastic for us over the years.

“So it’s another one where we’ll sit down with him, see where his performances are between now and the end of the season and we’ll speak to him.

“If he feels it’s right to go elsewhere then we’ll discuss that but if not we’ll discuss how we go.”

Henen is likely to find the competition for a first team place even more fierce next season, when Ademola Lookman and Henry Onyekuru are due back from their loan spells.

Everton, who sold Aaron Lennon to Burnley in January, can also call upon Theo Walcott and Yannick Bolasie in the Belgian’s position.

Henen, who turns 22 in April, spent time at Anderlecht and Monaco before his transfer to Goodison Park, from where he was loaned to Fleetwood Town during the 2015-16 season.
