West Ham United co-chairman David Sullivan has suggested to The Mirror that Crystal Palace would be paying too much to sign Christian Benteke from Liverpool in the summer transfer window.

According to a report in The Mirror at the weekend, Benteke is set to leave Liverpool for Premier League rivals Palace this summer.

The Reds reportedly want as much as £32 million in transfer fees to part company with the Belgium international striker.

Earlier this month, The Mirror claimed that Palace are willing to match Benteke’s £120,000-a-week salary he currently earns at Liverpool.

West Ham co-chairman Sullivan has suggested that Palace are paying too much for the former Aston Villa striker.

“Every year we say the transfer window has gone crazy but it really has gone barmy this year – particularly if you are looking for strikers,” Sullivan told The Mirror.

“There are 20 or 30 clubs in Europe, all with money, looking for a striker. And when you have a club like Crystal Palace will to pay £125-130k a week to a guy at Liverpool [Christian Benteke], you do think it has gone barmy. Add in the demands of agents and players, this year has just gone crazy.”

Benteke scored nine goals and created 30 chances in 29 Premier League appearances for Liverpool last season.

The 25-year-old striker scored one goal and created five chances in seven Europa League games for the Merseyside outfit during the 2015-16 campaign.

During the 2014-15 season, Benteke scored 13 goals and created 33 chances in 29 Premier League matches for Villa, who will play in the Championship during the 2016-17 campaign.
